From a very young age I was fascinated by the human body and what it was capable of. I remember going to the grocery store with my mother and sneaking over to the magazine section to lookl at the bodybuilding magazines. I was enamoured with the men and women in those pages and I remembered thinking that I wanted to look like that one day. I began lifting weights at a very young age. I purcahsed my first weight bench when I was 10 years old. It was on sale at K-mart for $85. I put it on lay away and it took me 3 months to pay it off. I promptly took it home that evening, put it together and began lifting weights on it every night at 7pm for the next several years.
I competed in my first bodyuilding competition when I was 19 years old. It was the 2004 NPC Utah cup. I had never even seen a bodyuilding show before, so this was a completly new expereince for me. I signed up for the Teen division, Novice, & Open heavey weight. I remember being so dehydrated from the lack of water, and so tired! I weighed in at 212lbs. I ended up winning the teen divisoion, the novicve division and the Open Heaveyweight division. As i was colecting my thingds back stage to go home I was confronted by one of the shows workers who told me I still had anothere catagory to compete in? I was not aware of this at the time but if you win your Open wight division you are entered in to the overall division to compete agaisnt the other weight classes to see who will take hom ethe shows overall trophey. So needles to say I ran back out on stage to compete in another posedown. I was shocked when i edned up winning that one as well to be crowned Mr Utah! That was a very special day for me and it marked a turning point in my life. From that point forward I wanted to be a bodybuilder and I was dead set on carving out my place in the industry.
One month later I competed in the Las vegas classis and won the teen divison in that show. I competed in the open division and realized that I was undersized when competing agaisnt some of the older more matuire athletes there, so I spent the next year putting on size. The next show I competed in was the LAs Vegas classis again the next year. I placed 4th in the open heavey weight division. I spent another year puttin on size and competed in the emerald cup and placed 3rd in the Super heavey wight class. I took another month to tighten up my body and I competed in the Sawn ray classis in denver colorado and ended up winning my super heaveyweight class and won the shows overall title. My next competiton was the Jr nationals in Chicago. I placed 5th in the super heaveywights. This was a large show and I was awed at the size of the men in my division. I was 23 yrs old at this time and was competing agasint guys who were 10-15 years older then i was. The next show was 2 months later and would be the pinnacle of amatuer bodybuilding, the USA's! I was very nervous as I was getting ready for this show as it would be the largest show I had ever competed in! I tightend up my form for this show and lost a few more lbs of fat and water and weighed in at 257 lbs. I placed 5th in the super heaveywieght class and I could not have been happeir! It was a strong class and my goal was to place in the top 5.
I get asked on a regular basis when I plan to compete next? As of right now I have not plans to step on stage in the near future, as I have plenty on my plate with the current business projects I am involved with. However, I still do seminars and appearances whenever I can. I love to educate and give back to the health and fitness community in anyway I can. It truely is my passion.
